Supercapacitor Engine Starters

Supercapacitor engine starters (sometimes referred to as "super capacitor batteries") are high-power starting devices designed specifically to crank engines quickly and reliably. Unlike traditional starting batteries that rely on chemical reactions, supercapacitors store energy electrically and can release it almost instantly. This allows them to deliver extremely high starting current on demand, even after long periods of inactivity. In marine and industrial applications, supercapacitor engine starters are used as dedicated starting solutions, either paired with a small battery or used on their own, depending on the system design.

The main advantage of supercapacitor engine starters is durability and consistency. They recharge very quickly, are not damaged by deep discharge, and are unaffected by cold temperatures or long storage. Because there is no chemical wear, they can handle hundreds of thousands of start cycles with little to no performance loss. While they excel at engine starting, they are not intended to power onboard equipment or provide long-term energy storage, making them a reliable replacement for traditional starting batteries but not for house battery banks.

The application of super capacitors varies depending upon your specific needs. Attached is a typical schematic of a 3 engine boat. In many applications the battery in parallel with the super capacity is not required. What an amazing simple solution! BTW they last for over 1 million starts!
