Victron Temperature Sensor for BMV-702/712

The Victron Temperature Sensor for BMV-702/712 (ASS000100000) is an optional battery temperature sensor designed specifically for use with the Victron BMV-702, BMV-712 Smart, SmartShunt, and VE.Bus Smart Dongle. When connected to the auxiliary input terminal on the shunt or SmartShunt, it enables the battery monitor to measure and display live battery temperature — unlocking temperature-compensated state of charge calculations, temperature-triggered alarms, and real-time temperature data logging alongside voltage and current measurements.

The sensor consists of a two-wire cable with a temperature-sensing element encased in an M10 ring terminal at one end, and ferrule connections at the other. The ring terminal is bolted directly to the positive terminal of the battery being monitored, placing the sensing element in direct contact with the battery terminal for accurate temperature measurement. The red cable end — which includes an integrated fuse — connects to terminal B1 on the shunt, and the black cable end connects to terminal B2.

Battery capacity is temperature-dependent: compared to a battery's rated capacity at 20°C, capacity reduces by approximately 18% at 0°C and 40% at −20°C. When the temperature sensor is connected, the BMV battery monitor automatically adjusts its remaining capacity and time-to-go calculations based on live temperature — ensuring the state of charge reading remains accurate even in cold ambient conditions where an uncorrected reading would significantly overstate available capacity.

Note that the auxiliary input (terminal B2) on the shunt can only be used for one function at a time — either second battery voltage monitoring, midpoint voltage monitoring, or temperature monitoring. Selecting temperature monitoring with this sensor means the auxiliary input is no longer available for the other two functions. When connected to the BMV-712 Smart, temperature data is also shared across VE.Smart Networking to connected Victron solar chargers for temperature-compensated charging.

Battery Temperature Measurement via Auxiliary Input

Connects to terminal B1 and B2 on the BMV shunt or SmartShunt to enable live battery temperature measurement and display — using the auxiliary input channel that would otherwise be used for second battery voltage or midpoint monitoring. Only one auxiliary function can be active at a time.

Temperature-Compensated State of Charge Calculations

When the temperature sensor is active, the BMV battery monitor automatically adjusts its available capacity and time-to-go calculations based on real-time battery temperature — compensating for the significant reduction in usable battery capacity that occurs at low temperatures and ensuring accurate state of charge readings in cold conditions.

High and Low Temperature Alarms

Programmable high and low temperature alarm thresholds can be set in the battery monitor, triggering visual and audible alerts and the bi-stable relay when battery temperature moves outside the defined safe operating range — providing early warning of overheating or critically cold battery conditions.

VE.Smart Networking Temperature Sharing (BMV-712 Smart)

When connected to a BMV-712 Smart, live battery temperature data is shared wirelessly via VE.Smart Networking to connected Victron SmartSolar MPPT solar charge controllers — enabling temperature-compensated charging voltage adjustment at the solar charger without requiring a separate temperature sensor at the charger itself.

M10 Ring Terminal — Direct Battery Terminal Connection

The M10 ring terminal at the sensor end bolts directly to the positive terminal of the battery being monitored, ensuring the sensing element is in close thermal contact with the battery for accurate temperature measurement — rather than measuring ambient air temperature near the battery.
