The Victron Centaur Battery Charger is a professional-grade, three-bank automatic battery charger designed for marine, RV, and off-grid applications requiring simultaneous charging of up to three independent 12V battery banks from a single charger. Available in seven output current ratings — 20A, 30A, 40A, 50A, 60A, 80A, and 100A — all models feature a three-stage Bulk/Absorption/Float charging algorithm, universal AC and DC input, and three fully isolated outputs each capable of delivering the full rated charge current independently.
All Centaur models operate without adjustment over a 90–265V AC input range at 50 or 60 Hz, and also accept a 90–400V DC supply — making each model a genuine worldwide product and a capable DC-DC charging converter in diesel-electric and hybrid generator systems. Unlike many chargers that claim universal input but reduce output power at the extremes of the range, the Centaur maintains full output current throughout its entire specified input voltage range.
The three isolated DC outputs allow each battery bank to be charged at the full rated current independently — a key distinction from chargers that split the total current across outputs. Each output uses a common negative rail but independent positive terminals, with any single output capable of supplying 100% of the rated charge current when only one battery is connected. A DIP switch on the PCB selects the appropriate absorption and float voltages for Flooded Lead-Acid, GEL, or AGM battery chemistry — with the charger defaulting to GEL settings from the factory.
Temperature compensation is provided by an internal sensor, adjusting charge voltage at −2 mV/°C per cell to correct for ambient temperature changes during the charge cycle. The aluminium, epoxy powder-coated enclosure with drip shield and stainless steel fixings is designed to withstand the heat, humidity, and salt air of marine environments, with circuit boards acrylic coated for maximum corrosion resistance. CE and UL certified, the Centaur is suitable for both European and North American installations.
Features
Three Fully Isolated Outputs — Each Capable of Full Rated Current
Three isolated DC outputs charge up to three separate battery banks simultaneously. Critically, each output is capable of supplying the full rated charge current independently — so a 60A Centaur can deliver all 60A to a single battery if only one bank is connected, rather than dividing the current equally across outputs.
Universal AC and DC Input — Worldwide Operation
All models accept 90–265V AC at 45–65 Hz without any adjustment or switching — maintaining full output power throughout the entire input range. The charger also accepts 90–400V DC input, making it suitable as a DC-DC charging converter in diesel-electric systems and hybrid generator installations.
Three-Stage Bulk / Absorption / Float Charging
The fully automatic three-stage charging algorithm charges at maximum bulk current until output reduces to 70% of rated current, then initiates a four-hour timed absorption phase before switching to float. The charger can remain connected indefinitely in float mode without risk of overcharging or excessive gassing.
DIP Switch Battery Type Selection — Flooded, GEL, AGM
A DIP switch on the PCB selects the optimum absorption and float voltages for Flooded Lead-Acid, GEL, or AGM batteries — with individual absorption voltages of 14.5V (LA), 14.3V (AGM), 14.2V (GEL), and 14.7V (Other) — ensuring correct charging for any standard lead-acid battery chemistry.
Temperature-Compensated Charging
An internal temperature sensor automatically adjusts charge voltage at −2 mV/°C per cell (−1 mV/°F per cell) throughout the charge cycle — compensating for ambient temperature changes and ensuring accurate absorption and float voltages in hot engine rooms and cold winter installations.
Aluminium Epoxy Powder-Coated Marine Enclosure
The aluminium enclosure with epoxy powder coating, drip shield, and stainless steel fixings is built to withstand the heat, humidity, and salt air exposure typical of marine installations. Circuit boards are acrylic coated for maximum corrosion resistance and long-term reliability in adverse environments.
CE and UL Certified — Global Compliance
All Centaur models meet the requirements of both CE (European) and UL (United States) standards — making them suitable for installation on vessels and in vehicles for both European and North American markets without requiring separate model variants.
Floor and Wall Mountable
Suitable for both floor and wall mounting, with vertical orientation recommended for optimum cooling. A wall mounting bracket is included. Maximum battery cable length is 6 metres, with minimum cable cross-sections specified per model in the installation manual.
