The Victron Orion 24/12-70A is a high-power, non-isolated DC-DC converter that steps 24V down to a nominal 12V at up to 70AA continuous output, for installations that need more current than the compact Orion IP67 range provides. Being non-isolated, it is smaller, lighter, and more efficient than an equivalent isolated converter, and is intended for systems where the input and output negative are already on the same common ground.
The output voltage is adjustable between 10V and 15V using the onboard potentiometer, so the converter can also be set up as a basic battery charger for a 12V starter or accessory battery in an otherwise 24V system, rather than only as a fixed-voltage converter. Up to five units can be connected in parallel to increase the available output current for larger loads such as inverters, winches, or bow thrusters. This version uses M6 binding-post terminals in place of the standard cable leads, making it easier to connect heavier-gauge cable directly at the unit.
A remote on/off connection is built in: the factory wire bridge on the green connector can be replaced with a low-power switch (switched current under 100 mA), or removed and wired to the 24V supply through a switch such as an engine run/stop signal, so the converter only runs when the source system is active.
Installation is straightforward but polarity-sensitive: the minus (negative) cables must be connected first, before any other wiring, since a poor minus connection can result in output overvoltage. The unit is resin encapsulated and IP67 rated for damp engine room, bilge, or exposed marine environments.
Features
Adjustable Output - Doubles as a Battery Charger
Output voltage is adjustable from 10V to 15V via the onboard potentiometer, so the 70AA converter can be set up to charge a 12V starter or accessory battery rather than just supply a fixed 12V load.
Parallel Operation - Up to Five Units
Up to five Orion 24/12-70A units can be connected in parallel to increase total output current for larger 12V loads fed from a 24V system.
Remote On/Off Control
The factory wire bridge on the green connector can be replaced with a low-power switch (under 100 mA) or wired to an external control signal such as an engine run/stop switch, so the converter only operates when needed.
Non-Isolated, High-Power Design
Being non-isolated keeps the 70AA converter smaller, lighter, and more efficient than an equivalent isolated unit - suited to systems where the 24V and 12V sides already share a common negative.
Resin Encapsulated, IP67 Rated
Fully resin encapsulated construction seals the electronics against moisture and vibration, with an IP67 rating for reliable operation in damp engine room, bilge, or exposed marine locations.
Polarity-Critical Minus-First Installation
The minus (negative) cables must be connected first during installation - a poor minus connection can otherwise result in output overvoltage, so correct wiring order matters for this converter.
