Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC Battery Charger

The Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A is a next-generation adaptive DC-DC battery charger engineered from the ground up for dual battery systems charged by an intelligent or smart alternator. Rated at 50A maximum output current with 700W continuous power at 40°C, it provides fully controlled, adaptive battery-to-battery charging in 12V vehicle and marine systems — solving the common problem of smart alternators (Euro 5/Euro 6) that supply insufficient charging voltage to properly charge a service battery, or where extended cable lengths cause significant voltage drop.

Unlike conventional DC-DC converters, the Orion XS is a true battery charger — featuring a four-stage adaptive charging algorithm (Bulk, Absorption, Float, Storage) with fully programmable parameters and eight pre-programmed battery presets for all common lead-acid and LiFePO₄ battery chemistries. Absorption time is automatically adjusted based on discharge depth — kept short after shallow discharges to prevent overcharging, and extended after deep discharges to ensure complete recharge. The charge current is adjustable in 0.1A steps via VictronConnect, enabling the output to be precisely limited to protect the input (starter) battery and alternator from overload.

Integrated engine shutdown detection automatically activates the charger only when the alternator is supplying power — preventing the service battery from discharging the starter battery when the engine is stopped. A configurable input undervoltage lockout shuts down the charger when the input voltage drops below a set threshold, protecting the starter battery from deep discharge during low alternator output periods. Low temperature shutdown prevents lithium battery damage during cold-weather charging.

Built-in Bluetooth Smart enables full monitoring and configuration via the VictronConnect app — with Instant Readout displaying key data in the device list without requiring a connection. VE.Smart Networking shares voltage, temperature, and current data wirelessly from connected BMV battery monitors and SmartShunts for optimised charging. A VE.Direct port enables wired GX device integration with full DVCC support, and the IP65-rated enclosure ensures reliable operation in engine bays, bilges, and outdoor environments.

The VE.Direct port enables wired connection to a Victron GX device for full system monitoring via VRM, with DVCC support (firmware v1.03 or later) allowing the GX device and Lynx Smart BMS NG to automatically set charge voltages and currents based on live battery cell data — replacing the internal charge algorithms with closed-loop BMS control.
