The Victron Orion-Tr 24/12 DC-DC Converter (non-isolated) is a high-efficiency, compact step-down converter designed to power 12V loads and accessories from a 24V battery bank. Available in four output current ratings — 5A (60W), 10A (120W), 15A (180W), and 20A (240W) — all models use synchronous rectification to achieve full-load efficiency exceeding 95%/97%, a remote on/off terminal for engine-running detection and load control, screw terminal connections requiring no special tools, and IP43 protection when installed with screw terminals oriented downwards.
The adjustable output voltage — configurable from approximately 9.5V to 17V — allows the Orion-Tr to be used not only as a fixed 12V power supply but also as a battery charger for a 12V service or starter battery in a 24V system. The output voltage can be set to the absorption voltage of the connected battery to enable float-and-charge operation — though for dedicated battery charging applications with adaptive three-stage algorithms, Victron recommends the Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated charger instead.
A remote on/off terminal allows the converter to be switched on and off by a low-power switch or the engine run/stop signal — eliminating the need for a high-current switch in the input wiring and enabling automatic activation when the engine is running. An unlimited number of Orion-Tr units can be connected in parallel to increase total output current for larger load requirements. All models are short-circuit proof and include reverse polarity protection via an input fuse on the positive input cable.
The non-isolated design means the input and output share a common ground — which is appropriate for most vehicle and marine installations where both battery banks share the same chassis or hull ground. For installations requiring separate chassis grounds between the input and output, the isolated Orion-Tr variant should be used instead.
Features
High Efficiency — Over 95%/97% at Full Load
Synchronous rectification achieves full-load efficiency exceeding 95%/97% across all four current ratings — minimising heat generation and energy loss during continuous operation, and eliminating the need for additional heat sinking in most standard installation environments.
Adjustable Output Voltage — Doubles as a Battery Charger
The output voltage is adjustable from approximately 9.5V to 17V, allowing the Orion-Tr to be configured to charge a 12V lead-acid or lithium battery in a 24V system — by setting the output voltage to the battery's absorption voltage for controlled charging and float maintenance.
Remote On/Off Terminal — Engine Running Detection
A remote on/off terminal allows the converter to be activated and deactivated by a low-power switch, relay, or ignition signal — enabling automatic operation only when the engine is running and preventing the service battery from discharging the starter battery when the vehicle is parked.
IP43 Protection — Screw Terminal Down Orientation
Rated IP43 for protection against solid object ingress (>1mm) and water spray up to 60° from vertical when installed with screw terminals oriented downwards — suitable for installation in engine bays, battery compartments, and enclosed electrical cabinets where some moisture exposure is possible.
Non-Isolated — Common Ground Between Input and Output
The non-isolated design shares a common negative ground between the 24V input and 12V output — appropriate for most vehicle and marine installations where both battery systems share the same chassis or hull ground. For systems requiring separate chassis grounds, the isolated Orion-Tr is the correct variant.
Screw Terminal Connections — No Special Tools Required
All input and output connections are made via screw terminals — accepting cables up to 6mm² (AWG10) without requiring crimped connectors or special tools, enabling fast and straightforward installation in any environment.
Unlimited Parallel Operation
An unlimited number of Orion-Tr units can be connected in parallel to increase total output current — allowing the output capacity to be scaled from 5A to any required current by adding additional units without additional controller hardware.
Short-Circuit Proof with Input Fuse Protection
All models are short-circuit proof on the output — protecting the converter from damage under direct short-circuit conditions. An input fuse on the positive input cable protects the converter and input wiring from damage in the event of a reverse polarity connection.
