The Victron Energy Smart Orion-Tr Isolated DC-DC Charger is a professional-grade battery-to-battery charger designed for dual battery systems in vehicles, boats, caravans, and off-grid installations where the starter battery and alternator are used to charge a separate service battery. With galvanic isolation of 200V DC between input, output, and chassis, it allows the service battery to have a completely independent ground reference — making it the ideal solution for installations where separate chassis grounds are required, such as marine systems with cathodic protection, vehicles with sensitive electronics, or lithium service batteries combined with lead-acid starter batteries.
Available in four configurations — 12/12-18A (220W), 12/12-30A (360W), 12/24-10A (240W), and 12/24-15A (360W) — the Smart Orion-Tr Isolated covers the most common 12V vehicle and marine dual battery scenarios, whether charging a 12V service battery at up to 30A or stepping up to a 24V service battery at up to 15A. All models feature a wide 8–17V input voltage range with a built-in buck-boost function that maintains stable output even when the input voltage briefly dips below the nominal output voltage — providing reliable charging across the full alternator operating range from cold start to full charge.
A key feature of the Smart Orion-Tr is its intelligent engine shutdown detection mechanism, purpose-built for modern vehicles equipped with smart ECU-controlled alternators. Smart alternators deliver variable output voltage and shut down when the engine stops — conditions that can cause a conventional DC-DC charger to either fail to charge efficiently or to drain the starter battery when the engine is off. The Orion-Tr monitors input voltage behaviour over time and automatically disables charging when it determines the alternator is no longer running, protecting the starter battery without requiring any additional relay or ignition sensing wire.
Built-in Bluetooth Smart enables direct pairing with the VictronConnect app on iOS and Android devices — no dongle required. Through the app, users can select from pre-programmed charge profiles for lead-acid and lithium battery types, configure engine detection parameters, adjust output voltage, set input undervoltage lockout thresholds, and monitor real-time input and output voltage. The Instant Readout function displays key live data directly in the VictronConnect device list without requiring a full connection, providing at-a-glance system status from a smartphone.
An unlimited number of Smart Orion-Tr Isolated units can be connected in parallel on both input and output to increase total charging current for large service battery banks. All models are fully short-circuit proof, deliver full rated output up to 40°C with automatic power derating above that threshold, and are rated for operation up to 55°C. Remote on/off terminals allow integration with a BMS, ignition switch, or other external control. Certified to ECE R10-5 automotive directive and EN safety, emission, and immunity standards.
Features
Full Galvanic Isolation — Separate Chassis Grounds
200V DC galvanic isolation between input, output, and chassis allows the service battery to maintain a completely independent ground reference from the starter battery and vehicle chassis. This is essential for marine systems with cathodic corrosion protection, lithium service batteries with floating BMS, and any installation where shared grounds would cause interference or safety issues.
Smart Alternator Compatible — Engine Shutdown Detection
The built-in engine shutdown detection algorithm monitors input voltage behaviour over time and automatically disables charging when it determines the alternator is no longer supplying power — preventing the service battery charger from draining the starter battery when the engine is off. This makes it fully compatible with modern ECU-controlled smart alternators that deliver variable output voltages.
Buck-Boost Function — Stable Output Across Full Input Range
All models feature a wide 8–17V input voltage range with a built-in buck-boost function that maintains a stable, regulated output voltage even when the input voltage momentarily drops below the nominal output — ensuring consistent, uninterrupted charging from cold engine start through to a fully charged alternator output.
Built-In Bluetooth Smart with Instant Readout
With Bluetooth Smart built-in, no dongle is required. The charger pairs directly with the VictronConnect app for real-time input and output voltage monitoring, charge profile configuration, engine detection setup, and firmware updates. The Instant Readout function displays live voltage data directly in the VictronConnect device list without requiring an active connection.
Adaptive Three-Stage Charging Algorithm
The Smart Orion-Tr applies a fully adaptive Bulk – Absorption – Float three-stage charge algorithm to the service battery, with pre-programmed profiles for lead-acid (AGM, GEL, flooded) and lithium (LiFePO₄) battery types selectable and fully configurable via VictronConnect — ensuring safe, optimised charging for any battery chemistry.
Unlimited Parallel Operation
An unlimited number of Smart Orion-Tr Isolated units can be connected in parallel on both input and output to scale total charging current for larger service battery banks — allowing the system to grow from a single unit to a multi-unit bank without additional hardware or control equipment.
Remote On/Off and BMS Integration
The remote on/off terminal eliminates the need for a high-current switch in the input wiring and can be operated by a low-power switch, an ignition circuit, or automatically by a Battery Management System — enabling seamless integration with lithium battery systems that require charge enable/disable control from the BMS.
Dual-Mode Operation — Charger and DC Power Supply
In addition to operating as a battery charger, the Smart Orion-Tr can be configured as a regulated DC power supply with adjustable output voltage (10–15V for 12V models, 20–30V for 24V models) — making it useful for powering 12V or 24V DC loads directly from a higher voltage source in vehicles and industrial applications.
