The Victron Energy Smart Battery Sense is a compact wireless battery voltage and temperature sensor designed to work with Victron SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers via the VE.Smart Network. By transmitting accurate battery terminal voltage and cell temperature data wirelessly to one or more connected solar chargers, it enables the charge controller to apply precisely compensated absorption and float voltages - improving charging efficiency, preventing overcharging or undercharging, and extending battery service life in installations where the solar charger is located at a distance from the battery bank.
In any solar system where cabling runs between the battery bank and the charge controller, voltage drop across the cable resistance means the controller's onboard voltage measurement will always read slightly higher than the actual battery terminal voltage - causing premature transition from bulk to absorption, shorter absorption periods, and chronic undercharging. The Smart Battery Sense eliminates this error entirely by measuring voltage directly at the battery terminal and transmitting the true value wirelessly to the charger, ensuring that charge stage transitions and voltage targets are based on the actual state of the battery rather than an inaccurate measurement at the controller.
For lead-acid batteries, the temperature measurement is equally important. Battery charging requires a higher voltage in cold conditions and a lower voltage in warm conditions to prevent gassing and plate corrosion. The Smart Battery Sense measures actual cell temperature - not ambient air temperature - and transmits it to all connected SmartSolar chargers via VE.Smart Network, enabling automatic temperature-compensated charging at all times without requiring a wired temperature sensor cable between the battery and controller.
With a Bluetooth transmission range of up to 10 metres, the Smart Battery Sense is suitable for most marine, RV, camper-van, and off-grid installations where the solar charger is mounted within a reasonable distance of the battery. It mounts directly onto the battery body using a built-in self-adhesive strip, connects to the battery terminals via two pre-crimped M10 eyelets on a 45cm cable with an integrated T1A 250V inline fuse, and requires no configuration beyond pairing with VictronConnect and enabling VE.Smart Networking. A single Smart Battery Sense can serve multiple SmartSolar chargers simultaneously within its Bluetooth range.

VE.Smart Network - One Sensor, Multiple Chargers
The Smart Battery Sense communicates via VE.Smart Network, a wireless technology based on Bluetooth Smart. A single unit can simultaneously supply voltage and temperature data to multiple SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers within its 10-metre Bluetooth range, enabling coordinated temperature-compensated charging across all connected controllers in parallel installations.

Tool-Free Installation - Mounts Directly on Battery
The Smart Battery Sense mounts directly onto the body of the battery using an integrated self-adhesive strip on the rear, with two pre-crimped M10 eyelet connectors on a 45cm cable connecting directly to the battery positive and negative terminals - requiring no tools, no drill holes, and no panel cutouts for a complete and secure installation.

Ultra-Low Power Consumption
With a power consumption of just 1.6mA at 12V when actively connected to the VE.Smart Network, the Smart Battery Sense draws negligible standby current - equivalent to approximately 38mAh per day - ensuring the sensor can remain permanently connected to the battery without meaningfully contributing to self-discharge during periods of low or no solar input.
