The Victron Energy Smart BatteryProtect 12/24V-65A is an intelligent, MOSFET-based battery protection device designed to disconnect non-essential DC loads from the battery before it is completely discharged — protecting battery health and preserving sufficient energy to crank the engine. With a maximum continuous current rating of 65A, a peak current capacity of 250A for 30 seconds, and an operating voltage range of 6–35V, it is suitable for a wide range of 12V and 24V marine, RV, off-grid, and vehicle applications.

Unlike mechanical relay-based protection devices, the Smart BatteryProtect uses MOSFET switches with no moving parts — eliminating sparks, contact bounce, and relay wear for a completely ignition-proof, maintenance-free design. Disconnect and reconnect events are deliberately delayed to prevent nuisance tripping: loads are disconnected 90 seconds after the battery voltage drops below the preset threshold, giving the engine time to start and recover the battery voltage before disconnection occurs. Reconnection follows automatically 30 seconds after the battery voltage recovers above the preset reconnect threshold.

Built-in Bluetooth Smart enables direct pairing with the VictronConnect app on iOS and Android devices for wireless configuration of all engage and disengage voltage thresholds, operating mode selection, and real-time status monitoring. The Instant Readout function displays key data — including warnings, alarms, and errors — directly in the VictronConnect device list without requiring a paired connection, enabling at-a-glance diagnostics from a smartphone. Alternatively, one of nine predefined voltage thresholds can be set using the programming pin method, with no smartphone required. Bluetooth can be fully disabled if preferred.

A dedicated Li-ion mode allows the Smart BatteryProtect to be controlled directly by the VE.Bus BMS, with immediate load disconnection on a battery alarm rather than the standard 90-second delay. The unit can also be used as a charge interrupter, inserted between a battery charger and a lithium battery, to interrupt charging under BMS command. Over-voltage protection disconnects the load automatically when DC voltage exceeds 16.3V (12V systems) or 32.6V (24V systems), protecting sensitive electronics from damage caused by charging system faults or load dump events.

MOSFET Switching — Ignition Proof, No Sparks

The Smart BatteryProtect uses solid-state MOSFET switches instead of mechanical relays, eliminating contact sparks, relay wear, and ignition risk. This makes it inherently ignition proof and fully suitable for installation in enclosed battery compartments, engine bays, and fuel-sensitive marine environments without additional spark suppression measures.

Bluetooth Smart with Instant Readout

Built-in Bluetooth Smart pairs with the VictronConnect app for full wireless configuration of all voltage thresholds and operating modes, real-time status monitoring, and firmware updates. The Instant Readout function displays key data — including warnings, alarms, and errors — directly in the VictronConnect device list without a paired connection, enabling at-a-glance battery protection status from any compatible device.

Delayed Disconnect and Reconnect — Prevents Nuisance Tripping

A 90-second disconnect delay prevents nuisance load disconnection when voltage briefly dips below the threshold during engine cranking or high-load events. If battery voltage recovers within this window, no disconnection occurs. Reconnection is similarly delayed by 30 seconds after the battery voltage recovers above the preset reconnect threshold — preventing rapid cycling under marginal conditions.

Li-Ion Mode — VE.Bus BMS Integration

A dedicated Li-ion operating mode allows the Smart BatteryProtect to be controlled directly by the VE.Bus BMS charge or load disconnect output, triggering immediate load disconnection on a battery alarm rather than the standard 90-second delay. The unit can also function as a charge interrupter between a battery charger and a lithium battery for BMS-controlled charge management.

Over-Voltage Load Protection

To protect sensitive electronics from damage caused by charging system faults or load dump events, the Smart BatteryProtect automatically disconnects the load whenever DC voltage exceeds 16.3V on a 12V system or 32.6V on a 24V system — providing an additional layer of protection beyond the primary under-voltage disconnect function.

Delayed Alarm Output

A short-circuit-proof open collector alarm output activates 12 seconds after battery voltage drops below the preset disconnect level — long enough to avoid triggering during normal engine cranking. The 50mA-rated output can directly drive a buzzer, LED, or relay to provide a local audible or visual low-battery warning before load disconnection occurs.

Ultra-Low Current Consumption

With a standby current consumption of just 1.4mA when active and 0.9mA in low-voltage shutdown mode, the Smart BatteryProtect draws negligible energy from the battery at all times — a critical characteristic in lithium systems after a low-voltage shutdown event where available recovery charge current may be very limited.

System On/Off Switch Functionality

The remote on/off input can be wired to a panel-mounted switch to provide a convenient system-wide on/off function, cutting power to all connected loads without interrupting the battery connection itself. This eliminates the need for a separate high-current main switch in systems where a low-current remote control interface is preferred.
