Victron VE.Bus to BMS 12-200 alternator control cable

The Victron VE.Bus BMS to BMS 12/200 Alternator Control Cable (ASS030510120) is a dedicated interconnect cable that enables the alternator charge control feature of the Smart BMS 12/200 to be used in systems that also incorporate a VE.Bus BMS. Without this cable, the two BMS units operate independently — this cable bridges the charge disconnect signal from the VE.Bus BMS to the Smart BMS 12/200, allowing the BMS 12/200 to respond to battery cell alarms generated by the VE.Bus BMS and act accordingly on the alternator circuit.

In systems where a Victron LiFePO4 battery communicates with a VE.Bus BMS — protecting against cell overvoltage, undervoltage, and overtemperature — the VE.Bus BMS transmits alarm signals to the BMS 12/200 via this cable. The BMS 12/200 then limits alternator charge current to a safe value and immediately stops the alternator charging process if the battery issues an alarm, protecting the lithium cells from damage caused by uncontrolled alternator charge current during a cell protection event.

This cable is essential in installations where both a VE.Bus inverter/charger system — controlled by the VE.Bus BMS — and an alternator are used as charge sources for the same lithium battery bank. It closes the communication loop between the two BMS units, ensuring that the alternator is subject to the same battery protection logic as the inverter/charger, without requiring any additional relays, contactors, or manual wiring between the two BMS devices.

Note that in this configuration the DC load output of the BMS 12/200 is not operational. The Li-ion battery and any loads powered by the Li-ion battery must not be connected to ground in this setup.
