The Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 150/85 Tr VE.CAN is a high-performance solar charge controller designed to efficiently harvest maximum power from solar panels and charge 12V, 24V, 36V, or 48V battery systems at up to 85 amps. With a maximum PV open circuit voltage of 150V and nominal PV power capacity up to 4800W at 48V, it is engineered for larger off-grid, marine, and commercial solar installations where output, reliability, and system integration are critical.
Featuring Victron's ultra-fast Maximum Power Point Tracking algorithm, the SmartSolar 150/85 continuously locks onto the true global MPP of the solar array — not just a local peak — delivering up to 30% more energy than PWM controllers and up to 10% more than slower MPPT designs. Its advanced partial shading detection is especially valuable in real-world environments where sails, obstructions, or cloud cover create multiple power peaks across the panel array's power-voltage curve.
The VE.CAN interface is the defining feature of this model, enabling up to 25 SmartSolar MPPT controllers to be daisy-chained and synchronised for parallel operation across larger systems. All units communicate through a single cable to a Victron GX device, switching through charge stages simultaneously to protect batteries and maximise overall system efficiency. A VE.Direct port is also included for direct wired connection to a GX device or PC. Combined with built-in Bluetooth Smart, the controller offers maximum communication flexibility across any installation.
With a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 98% and no cooling fan, the SmartSolar 150/85 operates silently and delivers its full rated output current up to 40°C. The fully programmable multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm supports eight pre-programmed battery presets selectable via rotary switch, along with a fully user-definable algorithm via VictronConnect — covering lead-acid, AGM, GEL, lithium, and other battery chemistries. A fully discharged battery recovery function initiates charging from zero volts and reconnects to depleted lithium batteries with integrated BMS disconnect.
An optional plug-in SmartSolar LCD display provides at-a-glance status monitoring without a smartphone or GX device. A programmable relay enables automated load management or generator start/stop functions, and remote on/off terminals allow integration with a VE.Bus BMS or external control system. Certified to EN/IEC 62109-1, UL 1741, and CSA C22.2 standards, the SmartSolar 150/85 Tr VE.CAN is built for long-term reliability in professional energy systems.

Ultra-Fast MPPT with Advanced Partial Shading Detection
The SmartSolar 150/85 uses an ultra-fast MPPT algorithm that continuously scans the full power-voltage curve to lock onto the true global Maximum Power Point — not a local peak. This delivers up to 30% more energy than PWM controllers and up to 10% more than slower MPPT designs, even in rapidly changing or partially shaded conditions.
VE.CAN Multi-Controller Synchronisation
The VE.CAN interface allows up to 25 SmartSolar MPPT controllers to be daisy-chained and synchronised in parallel, with all units switching charge stages simultaneously via a single cable to a Victron GX device. This enables centralised monitoring and coordinated charging across large-scale solar installations.
Built-In Bluetooth Smart
With Bluetooth Smart built-in, no dongle is required. The controller pairs directly with the VictronConnect app for wireless configuration, real-time monitoring, 46-day historical trend data review, and firmware updates from any iOS or Android device. Up to 10 units can be synchronised via Bluetooth.

Achieving over 98% maximum efficiency with completely fanless operation, the SmartSolar 150/85 runs silently and delivers its full rated 85A output at ambient temperatures up to 40°C, with automatic power derating above that threshold to protect the controller.
Flexible and Fully Programmable Charge Algorithm
Eight pre-programmed battery charge profiles are selectable via rotary switch, covering the most common lead-acid, AGM, GEL, and lithium battery types. The charge algorithm is also fully user-programmable via VictronConnect, enabling precise customisation for any battery chemistry or manufacturer specification.
Fully Discharged Battery Recovery
The SmartSolar 150/85 will initiate charging even when a battery has been fully discharged to zero volts, and will reconnect to a depleted lithium battery with an integrated BMS disconnect function — making it highly effective for recovery of deeply discharged battery systems.
Programmable Relay and Remote On/Off
An onboard programmable DPST relay can be configured for alarm output, generator start/stop, or other automated switching functions. Remote on/off terminals allow direct integration with a VE.Bus BMS or external control logic for fully automated system management.
Optional Plug-In SmartSolar LCD Display
A plug-in SmartSolar Control display can be added by simply removing the rubber seal on the front of the controller and inserting the display module, providing real-time status monitoring and configuration access without requiring a smartphone, GX device, or laptop.
